Out of the Vault: A Sunny Monday

Until a few months ago, I had a daily practice. A timed one. Thirty five minutes of free range painting. No expectations.  I'm not sure why I stopped them. Other work took over, I guess. Lately, I  have started to slide back into my  old routine. This one is from last Monday.

Jerusalem 1976

Jerusalem 1976

It's a cold cold day here in Iowa City, Iowa. Weather is all anyone wants to talk about. And with excellent reasons. The schools are closed across the state, extending winter break and thrilling students. Away from the constant chatter about fierceness of winter, I am warmed by knowing that my essay, Jerusalem 1976 has found a home at The Jewish Writing Project.

For those of you unfamiliar with The Jewish Writing ProjectI encourage you to visit and read the wonderful stories Bruce Black has curated into an online collection there.

From the Vault: A Cake for Mama

A Cake for Mama

My newest book, MAX MAKES A CAKE (Random House 2014), went through many drafts and versions on its way to becoming a book. Along the road there, it was once A CAKE FOR MAMA -- here's a sketch from the dummy I did for that story.

From the Vault: Estonian Mittens

It's cold here in Iowa, so mittens are on my mind. Today's image is from my April 4, 2011 blog post,  Reuimel's Mittens. These mittens remain my best thrift shop find.

If you read Saturday's post, mittens are also on my needles. After a weekend of stitching, I am almost done with my husband's Norwegian mitten right hand replacement

Have you always longed to knit  mittens? Need a little help on your journey? Read my essay, Mitten Knowledge  and cast on a pair of Starter Mittens

Interested in mitten cards? This image is available in packs of five cards.  Contact me for details.

Saturday Morning Knitting

The Norwegian mittens I made for my husband almost a decade ago may now be beyond repair. Each new mend reveals a new weakness.

Last year new mittens were knit, replacements. This time, the white replaced by a pale yellow wool. A stunning choice. A lovely pair, until the right one went missing last week. Luckily enough wool was left over and safely waiting in the stash.
